Plan Your Visit to Morton Family Cellars

An Apple Hill winery near Placerville, about an hour from Sacramento, minutes off Highway 50 on the way to Tahoe. Here's everything you need to get here and make the most of it.

Getting Here

We're at 2875 Larsen Drive in Camino, California — in the Apple Hill area of El Dorado County, just minutes off US-50.

From Sacramento

About an hour east on US-50 toward South Lake Tahoe. Stay on the highway past Placerville, exit for Camino, and follow the signs a few minutes up into Apple Hill. It's one of the easiest wine-country day trips Sacramento has.

From Placerville & Nearby

Just minutes up the hill from Placerville, and an easy drive from El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, and Pollock Pines. If you live anywhere along the Highway 50 corridor, we're closer than you think — close enough for a casual Sunday tasting.

On the Way to Tahoe

Heading up to Lake Tahoe? Camino sits right on the route. A tasting stop, a wine slushie on the patio, and a couple of bottles for the cabin make the climb up 50 far more civilized. (Designated driver required for the mountain miles — obviously.)

What to Expect When You Arrive

You'll find a small, family-run winery — not a corporate tasting campus. Park, say hi, and head into the restored 1960s speakeasy for a $10 tasting of naturally made wines, or grab a table on the patio beside the vineyard. We don't sell food, so bring your own picnic; leashed dogs are welcome outside, and kids are welcome during the day. Most visits pair perfectly with the Apple Hill farm trail — apple ranches, bake shops, and pumpkin patches are scattered along the same ridge.

Seasonally: spring and summer are patio-and-slushie weather with long golden evenings. Late September through October is Apple Hill season — the most festive (and busiest) time to visit, with extended hours and harvest in full swing at the vineyard; come early on fall weekends. In winter the crowds thin, snow often dusts the vines, and the speakeasy is at its coziest — honestly an underrated time to come up. Friday nights year-round mean karaoke from 6 to 9 (21+).

Do I need a reservation to taste?

Is the winery a good stop on the way to Lake Tahoe?

Yes — we're minutes off Highway 50 in Camino, right on the Sacramento-to-Tahoe corridor. A tasting or a slushie on the patio breaks up the drive perfectly; just bring a designated driver for the mountain miles ahead.

When is Apple Hill season, and how busy does it get?

Apple Hill's famous farm-trail season runs roughly late September through October, when the area's apple ranches draw big fall crowds. We extend our hours during that stretch — come early in the day on fall weekends, or visit Friday for breathing room.

Are kids welcome at the winery?

Yes, kids and families are always welcome during daytime hours. Friday night karaoke (6–9 PM) is 21 and older.
